During its regular meeting on May 11, the Moundridge City Council voted to adjust two city ordinances.
Council members unanimously approved Ordinance 1050, increasing electric, gas, and water connection fees. City Administrator Jeremy Johnson said the previous rates no longer covered rising material costs, causing the city to lose money on new utility connections.
Additionally, the council unanimously adopted Ordinance 1051, requiring contractors performing work in Moundridge to register annually with the city. Contractors will need to provide proof of insurance, workers’ compensation coverage, and applicable state registrations. City officials described the measure as a consumer protection effort designed to protect homeowners from uninsured or unlicensed contractors.
Mercy Hospital Street Closure
The council agreed by consensus to allow a temporary street closure near Mercy Hospital for Hospital Week activities on May 12. The closure was aimed at providing additional safety for pedestrians and children attending the event, which included food vendors, games, and activities.
Disaster Relief Donation Agreement
Council members approved a memorandum of understanding with the McPherson County Community Foundation to establish a system for managing donations following disasters or emergencies. Under the agreement, the foundation would oversee relief donations and ensure funds are properly distributed within the community.
Traffic Safety and Administrative Updates
City Administrator Johnson reported that preparations are underway for the upcoming swimming pool season and announced a defensive driving course for city employees scheduled for later this month.
Johnson also updated the council on a county traffic study recommending new four-way stops along U.S. Highway 81 at Arrowhead Road and 22nd Avenue. The recommendations have been forwarded to the Kansas Department of Transportation for review.
Executive Session and Adjournment
Near the end of the meeting, the council entered into a 15-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel matters before adjourning the meeting at 6:28 p.m.
The next regular city council meeting will be at 5:45 p.m. on June 8.
