Young anglers tested their casting capabilities June 20 at the pond in Moundridge’s Pack Park.
They took part in the annual youth fishing derby, sponsored by the Moundridge Lions Club, the City of Moundridge and the Moundridge Chamber of Commerce.
Dwayne Willis, with the Lions Club, said 15 youngsters participated in the catch-and-release event, ranging in ages from 3 to 11.
The competition was broken by age groups—6 years old and under, 7-8 years old, and 9-11 years old.
Natalie McLachlan won the 6-years-old-and-under category with a 13-ounce catch.
Kassidy Cornio and her 16-ounce fish took first place in the 7-8-year-old category, and McCoy O’Connor placed second with his 3.5-ounce catch.
For the 9-11-year-old group, Bella Schmidt reeled in a victory by catching a 22-ounce fish. Henry Gingerich’s 11-ounce catch was good enough for second place, and Cole Shaver came in third with a 10-ounce fish.
Willis said everyone left with a prize, which included fishing rods, tackle boxes and various toys.
A meal of hot dogs, chips and drinks was provided to all participants following the conclusion of the competition.
Moundridge City Administrator Jeremy Johnson said this was the 24th year the city and the chamber co-sponsored the event, though the 2025 event was canceled due to inclement weather and is why this year’s trophies have “23rd annual” engraved on them.
Willis said this was the first year the Lions Club helped with the derby.
“We’re always looking for new members,” he said. “It’s fun.”
Lions Club member Renee Wilson agreed.
“We’re not stodgy,” she said.
Willis said the event went well.
“It was a gorgeous morning,” he said.
The annual fishing derby is held to bring people together and enjoy nature.
“It’s just something for the community,” Johnson said. “It gets the kids outside.”
