The Kansas Family and Community Education members across the nation sponsored an Essay and Artwork Contest for fourth-grade students this spring.
This contest is held annually, and the theme for the year was “Respect.”
This FCE nationwide contest provides an opportunity for students to use literacy skills and develop ethical values.
The Kettle Queens FCE unit from Moundridge went into the fourth-grade classroom at Moundridge Middle School this winter and gave a lesson on respect.
Students were encouraged to write an essay and create hand-drawn artwork.
Students submitted their entries, and the Kettle Queens then judged the essays and artwork.
Crew Koehn, 10, received first place.
His work was then submitted to Kansas FCE where he won the Kansas contest.
From there, his work traveled to Kentucky to be judged on the national level.
Koehn received third place from the National FCE organization.
The Kettle Queens invited Koehn to ride on the Kettle Queens FCE float during the Black Kettle Festival parade in June where he helped throw candy.
Koehn and his family have been invited to attend a banquet in Atchison in October where he will receive his prize for winning the state contest.
